Buddhist University (Mandalay & Rangon)
The aim of our Budddhist University (Mandalay & Rangon) is to teach the monks, nuns and laypeople to skilful not only in English, Pali and Sanskrit, but also in Buddhism and other religions, for both academic and missionary purposes. There are nine Departments in our Buddhist University, namely- (1) Dept. of Vinaya-pitaka, (2) Dept. of Suttanta-pitaka, (3) Dept. of Abhidhamma-pitaka (4) Dept. of Pali and Philosophy, (5) Dept. of Sanskrit and Prakrit, (6) Dept. of English, (7) Dept. of History and Philosophy, (8) Dept. of Hindi and Chinese, (9) Dept. of Buddhist Missionary. Each Department has its own Head and Assistant teachers.
Programme I
( This (first) programme is adopted for the monks and nuns who have already passed the Pathamagyi (or Matriculation) examination and have a good knowledge of Pali and Buddhism.)
101—‘ Pali & Philology’:- (i) Anatta lakkhana sutta translation of the text and explanation of Dhamma contained therein; (ii) Pali composition and conversation; (iii) Philology- comparative study of Pāli and Sanskrit, Philological explanation of Pāli words through Sanskrit.
102 – ‘ Sanskrit’- Part I ;- (i) Pada mālā = Declensions of all nouns, pronouns and numerals, and Conjugations of Verb- forms (first group) with the Indicative, imperative, Optative and Imperfect terminations ( sabbagaṇika vibhatti); (ii) Kt- verb forms:- Past Participle, Present Participle, Future Participle, Gerund and Infinitive; (iii ) Passive and Causative verbs; () Sanskrit sentences- to be translated.
103– English ()- Part I - (i) Grammar; (ii) English words and (simple) sentences- to be translated into Burmese
104- - English Part (i ) (i) Grammar, (ii) Burmese words and sentences- to be translated.
105- - ‘History of Pali Literature’ Pitakas & Atthakathās.
(2) Diploma Course (Second year)
201- - ‘ Pāli & Philology’:- (i) Dhamma cakka pavattana sutta translation of the text and explanation of Dhamma contained therin; (i) Pali composition and conversation; (ii ) Philoloy- comparative study of Pali and Sanskrit, or Philological explanation of Pāli words through Sanskrit.
202- - ‘Sanskrit’ :- Part (i) Conjugation of verb-forms (second group) and Non- conjugational verbs, viz, Perfect, Aorist, Simple future, Periphrastic Future, Conditional and Benedictive; () Desiderative, Intensive and Denominative verbs. () five stories form Hitopadesa (Sanskrit text) – to be translated.
203- - English I : Part II’:(i) Grammar; (ii) English words and (simple) sentences- to be translated into Burmese
204- - English Part II’: (i) Grammar, (ii) Burmese words and sentences- to be translated.
205- - ‘History’: History of Buddhism in ancient India.
(3) B.A Course (Third year)
301- - ‘ Vinaya- Pitaka’: Pārājika kanda: Part (i) canonical text and its commentary: pp.1-120 each- translation of the texts; (ii) Explanation of Dhamma contained therein.
302- - ‘Suttanta Pitaka’:- Sīlakkhanda vagga: Part I:- canonical text and its commentary: pp.1-120 each- translation of the texts; (i) Explanation of Dhamma contained therein.
303- - ‘Abhidhamma Pitaka’:- Dhammasanganī-: Part I:- canonical text and its commentary: pp.1-120 each- translation of the texts; (i) Explanation of Dhamma contained therein.
304- - ‘Sanskrit & Philology’- (i) The remaining stories from Hitopadesa (Sanskrit text )- to be translated; ( ) Philology:- Comparative study of Pali and Sanskrit, or Philological explanation of Pāli words through Sanskrit.
305- - ‘Buddhism I’:- “Essayson Buddhism”- Part I (first half); (i) ‘ Dictionary of Buddhist terms’ part I ( first half ).
